The next revolution

The crisis at Telecel Zimbabwe points to the political and economic problems with the new indigenisation laws, which many see as yet another form of patronage for the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front. Telecel is the second largest mobile telephone operator after Econet; Egyptian shareholders controlled 60% of its shares through Telecel International. After a court case in 2007, Telecel International agreed to sell an 11% stake to a group of ‘indigenous Zimbabweans’ (defined as people disadvantaged before Independence in 1980), led by Jane Mutasa and the impresario James Makamba (this group owned the other 40% of Telecel Zimbabwe).
