Khama's expected triumph

The governing party did less well than it had hoped but trounced the opposition and confirmed the President's hold on office

Despite a depressed economy and disunity in its ranks, President Seretse Khama Ian Khama's Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) won its eighth successive election victory on 16 October. Provisional results gave it 45 seats (one more than at the last poll in 2004) in the 57-member National Assembly. Opposition parties took twelve, with one independent; electoral turnout was 74%. It was the party's first victory under the leadership of 56-year-old Khama son of the founding President, Sir Seretse Khama since he took over from Festus Mogae in April last year.
