Matebeleland fallout

The hoped-for seamless assumption of the late Vice-President Joseph Msika's positions by John Nkomo is teetering on the brink of farce. Thanks to Didymus Mutasa, the Secretary for Administration of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, the three Matebeleland provinces have each come up with a different nominee. Nkomo, who is ZANU-PF National Chairman, has the nomination of the debilitated party in Bulawayo; Minister of Mines Obert Mpofu has that of Matebeleland North, where he was Governor until last year; Matebeleland South has reneged on its pledge to Nkomo and has now put forward Naison Ndhlovu, the Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
