Remaking an old relationship

Paris tries out new policies on aid and trade in a bid to confront the growing power and influence of Asian economies

France hopes to diversify its trade with Africa and also to hold on to its traditional influence in its former African empire. This tricky balance is reflected in a report on overseas aid sent to Prime Minister François Fillon on 5 June. Sub-Saharan Africa still received 46% of the E4.5 billion (US$6.5 bn.) bilateral aid budget in 2007, according to the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), with another 10% for North Africa. In 2008, Senegal was the largest recipient, followed by Burkina Faso and Kenya.
