A double win for Bingu

The overwhelming election victory for the President and his party revive troubling memories of Kamuzu Banda's system

Voters overturned the political order in the fourth of Malawi's multiparty elections on 19 May. They voted for Bingu wa Mutharika for a second term in the presidency by a margin of over two to one against political veteran John Tembo, who represented the two main opposition parties (AC Vol 50 No 7). Voters also gave Mutharika's previously shaky Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its independent allies control of Parliament. The Malawi Congress party (MCP) lost 33 of its 59 seats and the United Democratic Front (UDF) 32 of 49.
