Malawi

A new federation

In Malawi, the President seems to be blundering towards a new version of the Central African Federation

Back in the 1950s, as independence for its Empire became inevitable, Britain tried to unite some smaller units into federations it deemed large enough to stand alone. This never got off the ground in East Africa or the Caribbean. Yet the Central African Federation (which is not even in central Africa) did for a few years uneasily exist. Now there is talk of rebuilding it in a new form, again bringing together Zambia and Zimbabwe (once Northern and Southern Rhodesia) and Malawi (once Nyasaland) as a group within the Southern African Development Community.
