Mutually assured destruction

The main threat to peace in Bissau is a coup d’état following the fatal bombing of the Army Chief of Staff, General Batista Tagme Na Waie, on 1 March and the retaliatory killing of President João Bernardo Vieira a few hours later. For now, the chances of further military intervention have receded (AC Vol 49 No 18). A planeload of regional diplomats descended on Bissau the day after Vieira’s death and have encouraged politicians and senior officers to chart a constitutional path to elections.
