An outbreak of cordiality

In the aftermath of the signing of the power-sharing agreement on 28 February, Raila Odinga turned to his adversary, addressing him as 'My countryman, President Mwai Kibaki'. Ever the politician, 63-year-old Odinga always publicly refers to 76-year-old Kibaki in polite terms. Earlier this month, Odinga told Africa Confidential that he would have no problems in working with Kibaki. 'The differences between us are not personal. I even have a liking for Kibaki. I became his minister. We were very close until that selfish elite came and took him away from us and made him a Kikuyu instead of a Kenyan.' The coalition deal after the 2002 election collapsed amid bitter recriminations from Odinga about Kibaki's broken promises.
