Tales of intrigue and treason surround the killing of 21 soldiers in the disputed Bakassi Peninsula
The Cameroonian army is again in turmoil, after the dismissal last month of the head of the Delta Force, deployed in the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula on the border with Nigeria. Claude Oyono Mveng was replaced by Colonel Ebaka Hypolite, a former Commander of the well-armed and privileged Presidential Guard. The Commander-in-Chief, President Paul Biya, signed the statement dismissing Mveng who, just a week before, had presided over the state funeral of 21 soldiers, gunned down by unknown assailants on 12 November at the C3 command post in the Peninsula.
