Trade union truce

The political truce which greeted President Lansana Conté's appointment of Lansana Kouyaté as Prime Minister will be short-lived unless there is a speedy transfer of power. The appointment of Kouyaté, a respected former UN diplomat on the list of candidates approved by the trades unions, was enough to suspend the national strike on 27 February. But protests will quickly resume if Conté blocks Kouyaté's efforts to form a broad-based government.
