Ethnic alarums

More than most countries, Kenya's politics is about winning over ethnic constituencies and building powerful coalitions. Recently, Kenyans have heard warnings about the dangers of ethnic violence ahead of December's elections, sounded by President Mwai Kibaki (Kikuyu) himself, United States' Ambassador Michael E. Ranneberger and US Senator Barrack Obama (whose father was from Nyanza). After Obama launched his US campaign this month, one Nairobi politician joked that the USA would have a Luo president before Kenya.
