Economy up, politics down

The post-war economy is easier to manage than Monrovia's politicians

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's economic record is widely praised, as she gets ready for her first anniversary on 16 January. Yet she does not control the flow of finance from the IMF and the World Bank - or the ambitions of local politicians, amid Liberia's transition from years of corruption and human rights abuses. International financial institutions predict healthy GDP growth of 8% in 2006 and 2007. Gradually roads, water supply and the electricity grid are being restored after a decade of civil war.
