A proxy election

Orange Revolutionarie smell victory over Banana Republicans in the constitution campaign

National elections are not due until December 2007 but Kenya is the middle of a bizarre election contest between two factions of the same cabinet. On paper, the campaign is about approval or rejection of a new constitution. The contest pits those calling for a 'yes' vote (symbolised by a banana) against those calling for a rejection of the draft constitution (symbolised by an orange). President Mwai Kibaki's inner circle is committed to the 'yes vote' but all the cabinet dissidents are calling for a 'no' vote.
