Sopi and Seck

Wade's winning slogan was 'Sopi' (change); now he faces the same demand from his old rival

Accusations that former Prime Minister Idrissa Seck is 'threatening state security' are heating up politics in the lead up to next May's parliamentary elections. Seen as a potential successor to President Abdoulaye Wade, Seck was fired last year after 15 months as Premier, the highest profile casualty so far of the fracturing of Wade's Parti Démocratique Sénégalais (PDS). Seck says he may run against Wade's party in parliamentary elections next May, adding to the threat posed by opposition plans to put up a single list of candidates against the PDS.
