Oligui’s commanding win

With 90.3% of the vote in the 12 April presidential election, on a 70.4% turnout, according to official provisional results, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema begins his new seven-year mandate with significant political authority. The trade unionist Jean-Rémy Yama claims that traditional methods inflated a victory that was already assured, but no one doubts that Oligui Nguema genuinely won. The African Union condemns putschists standing in post-coup elections, but one Libreville political scientist argues that voters supported him precisely because he had led the 30 August 2023 military takeover that ousted the Bongo dynasty.
