Contenders to succeed Maada Bio start the race early

Ruling party hopefuls are manoeuvring for the presidentials in 2028 – but there may be no vacancy

Less than two years into his second – and final – five-year presidential term, Julius Maada Bio is mulling both his legacy and a succession plan for 2028. The positioning has started within his ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). And strategists in the battered opposition All People’s Congress (APC) are working on ways to push their own candidate and capitalise on any schisms in the government. The two main parties are due to have their presidential candidates by the end of 2026.
