Can Forson’s budget reset the economy?

After promising to strengthen public finances, the new government is making difficult trade-offs on tax and borrowing

Reading the 2025 budget to parliament on 11 March, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson kept to the economic reset script and promises of a far-reaching National Economic Dialogue championed by President John Dramani Mahama. Winning rousing support from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament, Forson painted a sober picture of economic conditions, careful to blame many of the financial woes on the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
