SWAPO bucks the regional trend

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the ruling party’s first female presidential candidate, now has to deliver on her jobs promise

SWAPO retained power in the presidential and legislative elections last month although on a smaller vote share than in 2019 amid claims by the opposition of skulduggery in the conduct of the polls by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). These include allegations that the Zimbabwe African National-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) interfered in various ways with the electoral process to help SWAPO retain power. SWAPO’s ability to buck the regional trend of ruling parties either losing power (Botswana) or having to form a post-election coalition (South Africa) surprised many local commentators but was in line with its long-standing dominance through its bedrock support in the densely-populated Oshiwambo-inhabited north-central Namibia.
