Lourenço mulls his succession

With demonstrators marching again in Luanda, the MPLA government may start taking more risks

When US President Joe Biden arrives in Angola on 2 December, he will be able to compare succession notes with his counterpart João Lourenço. After pushing some ground-breaking reforms and then being persuaded to drop his bid for a second presidential term, Biden has a keen sense of his legacy – and the opportunities missed. Lourenço, who started his presidency in full reform mode, may identify closely with Biden.
