Race tightens as African contenders vie for top post

Questions about accountability have surfaced in a lacklustre campaign to run the Commonwealth

Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchwey, Lesotho’s former Trade and Finance Minister Joshua Setipa, and Gambia’s former former Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara are the top three candidates in the race to become the next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Elections will be held at the Commonwealth’s Heads of Government Meeting at Apia, Samoa from 25-26 October. Should the assembled leaders be unable to decide on the winning candidate, they can propose a new candidate from the floor.
