As the protests rage, Tinubu risks losing the north

A week of mobilisation on the streets is changing the political landscape

For President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, one of the most threatening elements of the ‘Days of Rage’ protests against his government is their national spread stretching from the ‘usual suspects’ in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja, to the northern cities of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Borno. The government cut overall numbers on the streets by co-opting religious and traditional leaders to warn of the risks of mass protests. Yet hundreds of thousands still turned out to demonstrate, despite attempts by armed police and soldiers to corrall them.
