Imagination deficit limits continental ties

The European Commission is focusing on migration but ignoring the scope for ambitious economic partnerships

Top of the priority list on Africa policy for German Christian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen, who won a second term as President of the European Commission on 18 July will be migration control and access to critical minerals. The shape of Europe’s quid pro quo for Africa, in the form of increased investment, market access and technology transfer, is much hazier. Compared to China’s growing investments in African economies, Europe is lagging well behind.
