Macron's multi-purpose stopover

French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Algiers on 25-26 August will be about more than gas deals. Paris may not be in as bad odour among Algeria's traditional nationalist leadership as when powerbrokers blocked TotalEnergies from taking over Occidental Petroleum Corporation's Berkine Basin oil blocks or took other action to stymie French business. But French statements ranging from Macron's (insufficient for his critics) regrets for the colonial past – another big apology is expected in Algiers – to the Quai d'Orsay's risk assessment for its diplomats placing Algeria among countries with 'particularly rigorous' living conditions are a red rag to the nationalist bull.
