Making the vote count

Voter registration ahead of the August general election is low because people are disillusioned with politicians and the system, say analysts and activists, and also because of backlogs issuing identity documents. Phase 1 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's voter registration drive last year garnered only 1.5 million new names out of a possible 6m. Phase 2 is aiming at signing up 4.5m new voters, including the Kenyan diaspora. IEBC is criticised for not doing enough to engage citizens about voting, and risks falling short of its target when the current registration round ends on 6 February.
