Now for the hard work

Having won clean elections, Kufuor's government has serious work to do

Ghanaians surprised themselves on 7 December, when 84 per cent of the electorate turned out to return John Agyekum Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party to the presidency for a second term (AC Vol 45 Nos 21 & 24). He won 53 per cent (4.46 million votes) against 44 per cent (3.75 mn.) for Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Kufuor's NPP secured a working majority with 129 seats to the NDC's 89 of the 227 constituencies declared as Africa Confidential went to press and three more expected.
