Drought and water mismanagement are pushing the country into famine. But with no serious opposition, Rajoelina reigns on

The rains are late in Madagascar – again. While over 750,000 people in the south of the island face severe hunger after three consecutive years of drought, the population of Antananarivo in the central highlands has access to water for only a few hours a day. Night-time queues at standpipes are common. Regular power cuts, due in part to lack of water to drive the hydroelectric generators that provide half the country's electricity, are another common grievance.
