Shooting the messengers

The row over the shootings at Lekki toll gate in Lagos a year ago is set to spill into the campaign for national elections in 2023. After an independent tribunal set up by Lagos State government found that soldiers had shot dead at least 11 unarmed civilians at a mass protest at Lekki tollgate on 20 October last year, the Federal government rubbished its findings. Last month Information Minister Lai Mohammed dismissed a leaked version of the tribunal's report as containing 'discrepancies, errors and omissions'. Ahead of a national election in which the incumbent powers will rely heavily on the police and military, the ruling All Progressives' Congress is backing them politically.
