President Olusegun Obasanjo's commitment to fighting oil sector corruption (AC Vol 44 No 18) is being severely tested on the one hand by a Federal Government probe of deals by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and, on the other, by the recent suspension or cancellation of nearly all crude and product sales contracts. Up for particular attention is the award of crude and product cargoes to Nigerian trader Sahara Energy, a company with a close relationship to NNPC Group Managing Director Jackson Gaius-Obaseki and other senior officials in Aso Rock, including Obasanjo's son Gbenga. Led by Tonye Cole, son of Obasanjo's former foreign affairs advisor Patrick Dele-Cole, Sahara has emerged from nowhere to be a powerful force since Obaseki took over NNPC.
