The death of the Zulu king, Goodwill Zwelithini, promises turmoil for the already volatile province of KwaZulu-Natal
The death of King Goodwill Zwelithini, 72, from Covid-19 complications on 12 March, without agreement on how the succession should be managed will complicate the kingdom's already stormy politics, royal sources told Africa Confidential. His two likeliest heirs predeceased him. The November death of the eldest, Prince Lethukuthula Zulu, the eldest son of Zwelithini’s first wife, Sibongile Dlamini, is being investigated as a possible murder and five people have been arrested. Prince Butho Zulu died of tuberculosis in 2018.
