Tandja wins, ok

The former ruling party pulled it off again: Mamadou Tandja of the Mouvement National pour la Société de Développement polled 59.9 per cent of the vote in the military-run presidential poll on 24 November. The MNSD also won 38 of the 83 constituencies; with 17 seats won by its ally, the Convention Démocratique et Sociale, it is firmly in charge. The polls were well run and good-humoured with no dispute over the result: no mean achievement for the second poorest country in the world which has a record of political instability and military rule.
