Coalition of the unwilling

Saïed's first challenge as president is forming a government from a parliament split among 21 parties

Parliamentary and presidential run-off elections in October have taken Tunisia into the unknown. Public disillusionment with the post-2011 political establishment resulted in very low turnouts, a president with no political experience and a parliament with an abundance of fractious parties that are making it hard to come up a working and sustainable government. With 21 parties in parliament – none with anything remotely near a majority and many with just one or two seats – plus 10 independents, the construction of a coalition is expected to take weeks. Indeed, there are fears that it may never happen and that there will have to be fresh elections.
