Hirak tracks west

Some saw President Abdel Fattah el Sisi's 89% 'yes' vote in the referendum on extending his presidential term to six years from four and allowing him to stand for a further term in 2024 as evidence that Egypt is unlikely to follow the insurgent path of Algeria and Sudan. Others wonder if Sisi – who has been working hard to legitimise the new military regime in Khartoum – forced through his referendum out of fear for his future.
