Poll knocks Frelimo confidence

The ruling party lost some key cities in the local elections. Party reformers are demanding radical change

As Mozambique awaits the final verdict on the local elections of the Comissão Nacional de Eleições (the electoral commission – CNE), due as Africa Confidential went to press, it is already clear that the ruling Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (Frelimo) has been punished heavily by the electorate. Despite winning most of Mozambique's 53 municipalities, its overall support across the country has plunged, with many victories only by the slimmest of margins. So slim, in fact, that the main opposition Resistencia Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo) is claiming fraud in many of them.
