Another over-priced port contract comes under fire for political patronage and secrecy
The Port Autonome de Conakry (PAC), Guinea's principal sea port, is a strategic national asset, so the fact that it is now to be run by Turkey's Albayrak (Albayrak Turizm Seyahat Insaat Ticaret AS), a major conglomerate active in construction, logistics, and services, has caused a storm among local stakeholders. On 10 August, the government signed a 25-year deal worth US$500 million in a contract that includes the rehabilitation and expansion of the port. As soon as the contract was made public the protests started.
