The National Islamic Front government may well return to the Machakos peace talks, on 3 August, after it stormed out on 11 July. This is not simple brinkmanship, as at least one mediator claimed, nor does it mean it really wants peace. It doesn't want the blame for the breakdown (which would bring United States' support for the Sudan People's Liberation Army) and wants to spin out talks until the West loses interest: it began preparing the public for failure ten days before it walked out.
