Veteran soldier-politicians, agitated by the clashes between farmers and herdsmen and a poor economy, urge Buhari not to run again

Do not adjust your almanacs. The succession of statements from retired generals and civil war veterans, most of whom held power in the 1980s, may make it look like Nigerian politics is veering into a time warp. First, the doyen of the soldier-politicians, General Olusegun Obasanjo, wrote one of his customary open letters to President Muhammadu Buhari on 23 January, advising him not to stand for a second term of office (AC blogpost). Obasanjo's open letters have unerringly triggered political change in the past, as President Goodluck Jonathan, beaten in the 2015 elections, knows to his cost.
