Macron ponders Africa play

President Macron is set to expound a vision for France's ties with Africa ahead of the Europe-Africa summit in Abidjan

The speech by France's head of state in Ouagadougou on the eve of the 29 November Abidjan summit will be a cornerstone of his international strategy, and advisors have been submitting ideas for weeks. All French presidents know that Africa and the Middle East are two parts of the world where France can still aspire to serious influence. Emmanuel Macron wants to go beyond a purely defensive policy stance: he is acutely aware that, having been elected to keep out the populist isolationist Marie Le Pen, his international credentials are doubly important. He must treat jihadist terrorism and the pressures exerted by migration equally seriously.
