Forced to focus on its southern flank by Libya's collapse and the Mediterranean migrant crisis, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni's government is getting ever more involved in African politics and business. Italian firms, led by oil giant Eni and utility Enel, and universities looking to generate income have also taken a more proactive approach. This has brought multilateral events to Rome and Milan – from an Africa-flavoured G8 to the Infrastructure Consortium for Africa, whose annual meeting was convening as Africa Confidential went to press – and sent large Italian delegations to Africa.
