Rebellion is stirring once more in the northern Rif region, regardless of King Mohammed VI's efforts to pacify the area with big infrastructural investment, such as the Tanger-Med container port and a new high-speed train. The 1958 revolt, which M6's father King Hassan II, then Crown Prince, brutally suppressed is not forgotten. The spirit of secession in the Berber-speaking, formerly Spanish-ruled area was quickly reignited when an El Hoceima fishmonger, Mouhcine Fikri, died in a rubbish lorry while trying to retrieve fish which had been condemned and confiscated. The secessionist Hirak el Shaabi ('Popular Movement') has gained momentum.
