Vaz clings to power

The President is ignoring the constitutional requirement to call elections and Parliament is deadlocked

Three years after general elections that were widely hailed as free and fair and which ended two years of post-coup transitional government, and two years after a promising donor round-table conference, optimism in Guinea Bissau is all but gone. For a year and a half, political life has been paralysed while President José Mário Vaz attempts to broaden his power base.
