Momentum is building behind General Haftar but the UN-supported government in Tripoli still has strong advocates
International support for General Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA), based in the east, is growing beyond his core base of external supporters of Egypt, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Haftar's Libyan supporters have held meetings with senior members of United States President Donald Trump's government and have been lobbying the United Kingdom, France and other European Union members. Covert French support for Haftar was exposed when jihadist opponents from the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB, aka Saraya Defend Benghazi, created in 2016), claimed to have shot down a helicopter carrying three members of the Service Action of the French external intelligence service, the Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure last July.
