Peace moves stumble

Séléka feels short-changed and distrust may be reaching the point where armed conflict could start again

The African Union has launched its initiative to mediate between armed groups and the government, and to convince the militia to implement disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) and get back to civilian politics. There has long been concern that DDR has been emphasised at the expense of broader reconciliation and that Bangui-centred solutions were taking the place of national ones. The evidence so far is that too much emphasis has indeed been placed on turning the militiamen into politicians overnight. The danger is that their dissatisfaction could send them back to the gun and the bush.
