Old man trouble

Since President Paul Biya will be 85 at the time of the presidential election scheduled for 2018 and he has named no successor, the opposition believes it has a chance to unseat him. Its chances are further improved, many say, now that John Fru Ndi, 75, the Chairperson of the opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF), has declared he won't stand again. Although Fru Ndi ran Biya close in 1992, when many thought he had actually won, he lost badly in 2004 and again in 2011. He also lost a senatorial election in humiliating fashion in 2013.
