Ouattara shores up legacy

The President seeks to entrench his party after his departure and improve the country's stability

Keeping the gunmen at bay is one reason that President Alassane Dramane Ouattara has launched a constitutional review. The other is to secure the future of his governing Rassemblement des républicains (RDR). Warlords who were crucial to ADO's victory over his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, still hold important state positions. The amended constitution, Ouattara's supporters say, could help to marginalise their former boss, Guillaume Soro, ex-leader of the Forces Nouvelles (FN) and now Parliament Speaker. If the presidency were to become vacant through death or incapacity at present, Soro would be in charge.
