Finally, the AU moves in

Although backed by the UN and regional organisations, AU plans to send an intervention force to Juba are fraught with peril

African leaders' plans to send a rapid intervention force to South Sudan to boost security and protect civilians will put them on a collision course with the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit. Salva insists he doesn't want to see 'one single' foreign soldier in his country. The African Union move comes amid mounting regional and international pressure from the United Nations for sanctions, an arms embargo and a beefed-up protection force. Civilians sheltering in UN camps have been killed, as have UN peacekeepers.
