Raiders hit Gambella

A ferocious raid by South Sudanese Murle forces into Ethiopia has raised questions about the ethnic division of the states

The massive cross-border raid for cattle and children by South Sudanese Murle people into Ethiopia's Gambella Region provoked a robust reaction from Ethiopia's armed forces, by far the strongest in the region. The raid came just as Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), was at last on the point of returning to Juba after two-and-a-half years at war. The estimated 150 dead were South Sudanese Nuer refugees of the Jikany sub-group. In the highly organised attack some 20 kilometres from the border, men in uniform carrying semi-automatic rifles abducted about 100 children and some 2,000 cattle.
