President Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba's re-election campaign looks less of a cosmetic exercise now that National Assembly President Guy Nzouba Ndama has declared he will stand in the 28 August election. Ndama is the latest bigwig to leave the increasingly fractious ruling Parti démocratique gabonais. The former Chairman of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, left in 2014 and last month, the PDG's Héritage et modernité faction, led by Alexandre Barro Chambrier and Jonathan Ignoumba, was expelled.
