Zuma's many foes mobilise

A campaign calling for Zuma's resignation is growing while his battle with opponents inside the ANC is undecided

The governing African National Congress (ANC) is under pressure from a wave of popular protest the like of which has not been seen since before the first free elections in 1994. That's the opinion of seasoned South African observers who warn that the forces for and against the President are finely balanced. Jacob Zuma's ultimate test may come on 27 April – South African Freedom Day – when a broad coalition of civic and faith-based organisations, social movements and political activists, including many former ANC leaders, will engage in country-wide actions which could include marches on the Presidency in Pretoria. The activists hope to reach a critical mass of popular mobilisation. What shape the actions will take will be determined at a major rally in Soweto on 23 April, planned by the People's Consultative Assembly, which was formed on 6 April on the steps of the Constitutional Court, the highest authority in South Africa's constitutional democracy.
