President Moi expects an easy election win as the opposition alliance breaks apart

A chronically divided opposition, more acquiescent donors and some economic growth help explain President Daniel arap Moi's cheeriness. After a cataract operation in Israel in mid-February he told his ministers that he had recovered so fast that he was viewing biblical sites only hours after surgery. He then invited Mwai Kibaki and Martin Shikuku, two leaders of the new opposition alliance, to abandon Richard Leakey and join him in the Kenya African National Union. They both declined but, with Kijana Wamalwa, called on Moi at the end of February, keeping quiet about the subject of the talks.
