Break for the border

The mountain kingdom has to forge a new relationship with South Africa

As politicians and soldiers in Maseru snipe (sometimes literally) at each other, they are unable to tackle the biggest issue in the kingdom: its relationship with South Africa. The Basotho are frustrated by the antics of their politicians, both opposition and government. An almost comical coup attempt on 29 February met with general derision. The leader of the opposition United Party, Makara Sekautu, and two soldiers from the Royal Lesotho Defence Force have been charged with high treason.
